Many people know the first line of Good to Great by Jim Collins. Collins begins with the line, “Good is the enemy of great.” The book goes on to chronicle stories of businesses that once experienced tremendous success and later slipped into mediocrity or despair. When was the last time any of us visited a Blockbuster Video or Kodak store to process film?
Collins wrote another book that I prefer, Great by Choice. Collins evaluated companies to discover those who exceeded returns in their respective markets by over ten times during periods of financial turmoil and uncertainty. His research led to four themes found in each of these over-achieving companies: Fanatical Discipline, Empirical Creativity, Productive Paranoia, and Level 5 Ambition.
