News: Press Release:  Lawsuit Related to PVPHS Stadium Lights Project

February 10, 2012

On July 14, 2011, the Board of Education of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District (PVPUSD) voted to discontinue the capital campaign project to install stadium lights at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School.  Since that date, supporters of the lights project have made several attempts at pressuring the District to change its position.  Recently, the District was served with a lawsuit seeking damages and trying to force us to move forward with the Environmental Impact process.

The District rejects this lawsuit as unmeritorious.  We are confident that the decision to end this project was the right thing for the community and within the legal rights of the Board of Education and school district.

We realize that supporters of the Peninsula High Stadium Lights project are disappointed over the fact the project was terminated.   Unfortunately, the Stadium Lights Capital Campaign was dividing the community and taking time and attention away from the District’s primary purpose of educating students.

Ultimately, the Board of Education concluded that the detriments outweighed the potential benefits, and that the project was not viable.  It is unfortunate that in response to this decision leaders of the Peninsula Stadium Lights Committee felt it necessary to file a lawsuit that has no merit.  The District will now be forced to defend itself and expend scarce resources on attorney’s fees and other legal costs that could have been spent on students and educational programs.

Feel free to contact Walker Williams, Superintendent of Schools, at (310) 378-9966 x404 if you have questions about this matter.
