Update on District Calendar for 2012-13
Because no agreement has been reached with the employee organizations, the Board of Education adopted a tentative calendar through January of 2013.  The first day of school for students will be (Tuesday) August 28, 2012.  Parents and community members can find the calendar on the District web site at  The calendar is subject to change based on a negotiated settlement.

Welcome to our New Administrators
Brent Kuykendall was recently appointed the new Principal of Ridgecrest Intermediate School.  Brent has served as an Associate Principal at Palos Verdes High School and Miraleste Intermediate School since 2008.

Dr. Charles Park has been named the new Associate Principal at Palos Verdes High School.  Charles is currently an Assistant Principal in the Pasadena Unified School District.  He earned his doctorate degree from USC in 2005.

Peninsula High and Palos Verdes High Ranked Among the Best in the Nation
Once again, both high schools in the PVPUSD have received national recognition for their outstanding academic programs. In the latest US News & World Report rankings of the nations’ best high schools, Palos Verdes Peninsula High was #23 in California and Palos Verdes High was # 53.  In the Washington Post rankings that were just released, Peninsula High was # 24 in California, and Palos Verdes High was # 61.   Both schools are competing with private schools, small charter schools, academies, and magnet programs across the nation.

Eight PVPUSD high school students were recently named 2012 National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners.  The Palos Verdes High School students are Kathleen Sy Osea and Miranda Rehaut.  The Peninsula High School students are Vedika Kumar, Kenneth Lee, Steven Lin, Min-Woo Park, Sulekha Ramayya, and Andrew Zhang.

Board of Education Meetings
At the May 24th meeting, the Board of Education adopted the following Vision Statement and Goals for 2012-13.

Vision Statement:
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District will continue to develop the whole child to thrive in a globally competitive age and enhance student achievement by providing a dynamic learning community in a rigorous academic environment.

2012-13 District Goals:

  1. Begin to implement the Common Core State Standards, while continuing to foster critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills.
  2. Maintain multi-year plans in order to ensure the fiscal stability of the District and to support a high quality instructional program.
  3. Enhance communication and collaboration between and among the administration, staff, students, parents, Board of Education, and community.

Common Core State Standards
The State is moving to a new accountability system based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in 2014-15.  The CCSSs are considered more rigorous when compared to the current California Content Standards and are focused on college and workplace preparedness.  School districts all over the State are currently developing plans to transition smoothly to the new system.   The PVPUSD’s game plan must include the possible implementation of new instructional strategies, offering high quality and systemic professional development to staff, gearing up for a new assessment system, and determining future needs for instructional materials and technology.

Update on District Budget Adoption Process
The Board of Education is legally required to adopt the District’s 2012-13 budget by June 30th, even if State funding is not finalized. The District is currently assuming additional revenue reductions from the State.  Since 2007-08, the District has lost over $600 per student in state funding.  The Governor’s current 2012-13 budget proposal, based on the May Revise, could mean a loss of another $400+ per student.

Capitol Comes to Campus
I would like to applaud Pam Secor and Sherry Cicchetti for organizing a very successful PVP Council of PTAs “Capitol Comes to Campus” program on May 18th and 19th.  Almost 300 people attended this civic-engagement event.
